With intelligent packaging concepts, Europe‘s leading manufacturer of cordless phones is contributing to greater environmental protection and more efficiency. By optimizing the packaging used for its telephones, Gigaset Communications will soon save about 150 tons of paper each year while also dramatically reducing its logistics and process costs. In the fall of 2007, the company had already taken a clear position regarding environmental protection with a comprehensive ECO DECT offensive and its certification to ISO 14001.

The development of energy-saving and low-radiation products and the continuing optimization of its need for energy and materials in production and logistics go hand-in-hand at Gigaset. As part of the company’s quality management programs, its employees make a constant contribution to these processes; in recent years they have been able to realize significant successes in the use of energy and materials.

One important milestone has now been reached with a significant reduction in the size of the packaging of A and C class telephones, which are sold in large volumes. Improved processes for putting together packages consisting of several handsets and the new, slimmer designs of the base stations and charging cradles in the 2010 A and C class portfolio made it possible to optimize the packaging.

For example, the packaging for systems (base station and handset) was reduced by 24 percent, while the trios – one base station and three handsets – shrank by 44 percent and the quattros – one base station and four handsets – by 51 percent. The annual savings will amount to about 120 tons of paper this year; beginning in 2011 it will be 150 tons a year.

Besides reducing the amount of paper it uses, Gigaset Communications has also slashed its logistics and process costs. In the future, a one-way pallet will hold 192 instead of 144 telephones (systems), for example. Applied to the full portfolio, these changes will make it possible to cut out 31 percent of all truck transports. In all, there will be an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of 240 tons – as much as is consumed by 40,000 trees or 40 hectares of commercial forest each day (6 kg per day per tree).

Efficient, sustainable operation is an important success factor for Gigaset, because customers around the world respect the high quality of the Gigaset products “Made in Germany.” Particularly outside of Europe, the interest in energy-saving, low-radiation products manufactured in an environmentally friendly way is growing steadily. At least every fourth household in Europe now has a Gigaset. In Germany, more than half of all households have a Gigaset telephone. The production facility of Gigaset Communications in Bocholt, which has been named “Factory of the Year“ several times, now has an annual capacity of about 16 million devices for global distribution.
